Subaru CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)

Subaru CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)

It used to be that manual transmissions delivered better fuel economy than automatics; but that is no longer the case when you consider how efficient the Subaru CVT transmission works.

Consider this example of the 2014 Subaru Forester vs the 2013 model. Both vehicles have the same engine and are roughly the same weight. The 2013 Forester has a traditional 4-spd automatic transmission that delivers 21mpg city / 27mpg highway. However, the 2014 Forester delivers 27mpg city / 32mpg highway with a CVT transmission. That 5 mpg difference is HUGE in both performance and fuel economy! (See the table below for more examples.)

On this page we'll explain how the Subaru CVT works with simple to understand videos and how it compares to manual and traditional automatic trans-missions. You will also learn which Subaru models offer the CVT transmission and which models should NEVER be considered for an automatic transmission - no matter what!

Subaru's Lineartronic CVT uses two hydraulically operated, adjustable  pulleys with a chain link that runs between and connects them. By adjusting the pulleys you can maximize performance and fuel economy without traditional gears!

As you can see, a continuously variable transmission functions as if it has an infinite number of gear ratios, constantly seeking the "sweet spot" between power and performance. We daresay it's much faster and smarter than human input (manual transmission).  Subaru CVT changes from ratio to ratio are step-less, contributing to the powertrain's smooth operation. Traditional automatic transmissions shift during a given minimum and maximum RPM which causes the slight "lurch" you are accustomed to. This decreases your fuel economy and doesn't give you the maximum power when you need it. The Subaru CVT offers the benefits of fewer mechanical  breakdowns, increased fuel economy and power when you need it.

Manual Mode
Just because you're driving a Subaru CVT vehicle doesn't mean that you are "along for the ride". After all, you are not driving your grandfathers Buick! The Subaru Lineartronic CVT can simulate a manual transmission by using programed "speeds" that hold the CVT pulleys in "fixed" positions. The number of positions varies by model from 1-8. It's like staying in "second gear" going down a snowy slope or when you need to "downshift" to accelerate onto a freeway. You are always in control.

Changing ratios is accomplished by tapping the +/- steering wheel mounted paddle shifters (on most models) - image left.

BENEFITS OF CVT
The Subaru Lineartronic CVT has several benefits:

Smooth operation: Continuous, step-less variation of the width of the drive and driven pulleys takes place without mechanical gear changes. Other than the response of the powertrain relative to driver input, there is no sense of upshifting or downshifting. The end result is smooth operation, which contributes to passenger comfort.

Fuel efficiency: The control modules for the engine and transmission keep the engine in its optimal power range, changing CVT pulley ratios to achieve improved fuel economy and performance.

Improved response: By eliminating gear changes, the step-less CVT enables the powertrain to be more responsive to changes in throttle application and vehicle speed. For example, there is no gear hunting when driving uphill. This is particularly evident on cruise control.

Maintenance free: The Subaru CVT is a sealed unit and requires no regularly scheduled maintenance - kind of like a maintenance-free battery.

Fun to drive: By simulating the operation of a manual transmission, the Lineartronic CVT's manual mode increases driver involvement and makes the vehicle more fun to drive.

Interior comfort: By incorporating chain drive in the CVT's design, Subaru was able to engineer a more compact unit. That enabled increased space for the passenger cabin, with more leg room, in particular.

Altogether, the Subaru Lineartronic CVT adds to the premium driving experience by allowing you to save money and still have FUN!
